The Virtues of Ahlul-Bayt (as): Angelic Presence

The virtue of being “The site of angelic comings and goings” (مختلف الملائکه) is one of the remarkable attributes of the Ahl al-Bayt (as), reflecting their unparalleled position in both the unseen and visible realms. This distinction highlights the unique and ongoing connection between the Ahl al-Bayt and the angels in various aspects. A closer study of this virtue not only deepens our understanding of their elevated status but also unveils their central role in the governance of the cosmos and the interconnection between the unseen and visible worlds. This article explores seven key manifestations of this profound virtue.

1. Presentation of Deeds to the Imams

One manifestation of the angels’ interaction with the Ahl al-Bayt is the weekly presentation of the deeds of mankind. According to narrations, angels bring the deeds of individuals to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the infallible Imams (as) every Monday and Thursday. This underscores the constant link between the Imams and the unseen realm, as well as their role as witnesses and overseers of the deeds of people.

2. Angels Serving the Ahl al-Bayt (as)

Another aspect of this interaction is the service provided by angels to the Ahl al-Bayt (as). Angels accompany, assist, and protect them, particularly during challenging circumstances. This bond reflects a profound spiritual relationship between the angels and the Ahl al-Bayt, revealing a connection that transcends the typical duties of angels.

3. The Descent of Angels on Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Decree when the affairs of the universe are determined, is another manifestation of the connection between angels and the Ahl al-Bayt (as). On this night, the angels descend to the Divine Proof of the time, presenting the decrees for the coming year. This highlights the role of the Imams in the Divine management of creation and emphasizes their position as channels of Divine grace.

4. Angels Visiting the Graves of the Ahl al-Bayt

Even after the martyrdom of the Imams, this connection persists. Angels visit the graves of the Ahl al-Bayt and, in some instances, such as in Karbala, groups of angels are not only frequent visitors but also permanent residents of these sacred places, maintaining a constant presence.

5. Angels Transmitting Divine Knowledge to the Imams

One of the responsibilities of angels is to convey Divine knowledge to the Imams. Through this process, the Ahl al-Bayt receive new and situation-specific Divine insights, suited to the circumstances of each event and era. This reflects the elevated status of their knowledge and highlights their exceptional intellectual and spiritual rank.

6. Angels Learning from the Ahl al-Bayt

The Ahl al-Bayt (as) are the teachers of angels. From pre-eternal realms, where the angels learned glorification (تسبیح) and praise of Allah (تهلیل) from the Ahl al-Bayt, to this world, where the exchange of Divine knowledge continues, angels regularly visit the Ahl al-Bayt to gain insights and understanding.

7. Seeking Permission and Commands for Managing the Universe

Angels, tasked by Allah to administer the affairs of the universe and referred to in the Qur’an as “those who govern the affairs” (الْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا), are instructed in narrations to first present themselves before the Imam of their time (as). They seek guidance and permission for their missions, whether large or small, and only then proceed to carry out their duties.

Finally, it is essential to note that since angels were created from the light of the Ahl al-Bayt and exist as a reflection of their luminous essence, they lack full independence from the Imams. In all their functions and responsibilities, angels rely on the guidance and authority of the Ahl al-Bayt.

Thus, the virtue of “مختلف الملائکه” (The site of angelic comings and goings) underscores the unique and unparalleled status of the Ahl al-Bayt within the framework of creation. Understanding this virtue opens the door to a deeper appreciation of their elevated position in both the unseen and manifest worlds and their central role in the Islamic worldview.
